Portus - Jun Abe
Let me tell you a little story about the book Portus.
In Evansville, IN there were probably about three or four comic book stores tucked away in different corners of the city. Well, in the summer of 2008, these comic book stores were practically where I lived. Blowing every single paycheck I earned at my part-time retail job. I was 15. Makes sense.
Moving on...
So on this particularly long summer day of '08, I fled my girlfriends' house to go read comic books by myself. Pretty typical of me at the time. I read a lot of manga, even back then, but that fateful day, Portus was the first I had seen of it's kind.
Shrink wrapped, on the bottom shelf, the only copy in-store, with a large parental advisory sticker, sat this unassuming graphic novel. It was dusty and had a colorful collage cover. Without a chance to even flip through it (as it was wrapped tightly in plastic), I bought it anyway for $10 that day.
It spent several weeks rolling around in my backpack before I sat down at the park and finally read it. Low and behold, I was absolutely hooked, and it was my first time ever being exposed to horror manga. Sure, it's very typical Japanese horror, but I think that's why I like it. It's very similar to Ring, but in gritty manga form, plus it has it's surprises, decent art, it's an easy read, and is very nostalgic for me.
Sadly, my relationship with that girlfriend ended and she made off with my only physical copy of Portus, but you can download it here.
